Title
Sprinkler system requirements.
Body
This is a follow-up on the Council’s discussion of May 1, 2018. See item CD 18-083.
There are two specific provisions that relate to sprinkler systems in the town’s Land Use Ordinance:
• Section 500, Performance Standards:
o 550(D)(8)(f)(1)(ii), page 5-35, “Dead End Streets,” which limits dead end streets to not more than 1,000 linear feet in length unless all dwellings beyond 1,000 feet from the nearest public street or private way have an NFPA 13D monitored sprinkler system. (This provision also appears in 911(M)(5)(b)(5)(b), Dead End Streets.)
• Section 900, Subdivision Review:
o 911(B)(1)(4)(i), on page 9-39, “Water Supply,” where in subdivisions where the need for additional water storage capacity has been identified, facilities for storage including “other methods acceptable to the Fire Chief” have been interpreted to allow residential sprinklers, in place of fire ponds with dry hydrants or underground storage reservoirs.
o 911(M)(5)(b)(5)(b), on page 9-60, “Dead End Streets,” which limits dead end streets to not more than 1,000 linear feet in length unless all dwellings beyond 1,000 feet from the nearest public street or private way have an NFPA 13D monitored sprinkler system. (This provision also appears in 550(D)(8)(f)(1)(ii), Dead End Streets.)
Copies of the relevant ordinance language is attached. Also attached is information from the fire-rescue chief about sprinkler systems generally and residential sprinklers in Windham.
