Title

Sprinkler System Requirements: State Regulations and Local Ordinances.

Body

The Town Council first adopted a fire prevention code, Chapter 95 of Windham’s ordinances, in February 2010. A copy is attached. In that code, sprinkler requirements were based on a building’s size and the type of occupancy.

In May 2016 the Council enacted an updated version, copy attached, now called the “Fire Prevention & Life Safety Code,” which based sprinkler requirements only on the size of the building and its proximity to public water service, without regard to occupancy or use.

Fire-Rescue Chief Brent Libby has provided a memo outlining the state’s approach to determining whether a sprinkler system will be required compared to the town’s ordinance.
